In that scene, Ted has recently told off his therapist. He basically implies that she can\u2019t care about him for real because she\u2019s getting paid to be with him. Now, he\u2019s back in her office after leaving their last session on that note.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
She asks if she can be honest with him. And then she tells him he offended her\u2014and she asks a fantastic question:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Would you coach football for free?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n Yes<\/em>, he says. The answer is yes<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Then she hits him with the kicker: \u201cbut do<\/em> you?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n The conclusion is clear: just because you\u2019re getting paid for something doesn\u2019t mean you don\u2019t fucking love it. It doesn\u2019t mean it doesn\u2019t leave you breathless.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Sometimes we do things just for money. Sometimes we do them because we fucking love them. Sometimes we\u2019re lucky enough to fucking love something and make money doing it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n I\u2019m not saying there are no people out there taking advantage of this space to just make a living or even scam people. But I am saying just because someone gets paid doesn\u2019t mean they don\u2019t care.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Therapists. Coaches. Findommes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n It\u2019s not different.
